“America was where it was worse. They hated the movie. They were angry about the movie. They were angry about the movie, but a lot of people saw it, so, I was surprised by it.
Dominic said he didn’t let the criticism get to him.
“Criticism only hurts if you agree with it. And I didn’t really agree with any of it. I think the movie is great,” he said.
“You can’t really think of other people for them, but I think when it comes to a famous American, what they want is the biography, they want that person to be celebrated, and that person. The celebration is according to the mood of the time,” he said.
He suggested that his portrayal of Monroe was not in line with the themes of women’s empowerment that were popular at the time.
“We’re living in a time where it’s very important to portray women as empowered, and they want to reinvent Marilyn Monroe as an empowered woman, you know that’s what they want to see,” He continued.
“And if you’re not showing them that, it bothers them,” he added. “Americans really don’t like you to be a monkey with your myths. They often want to jump to a solution without looking at any trauma.
Dominic rejected suggestions from the film’s critics that he had exploited Monroe.
“It’s strange because she’s dead. The film doesn’t matter to her one way or the other,” he said.
“What they really mean is that the film exploits his memory or his image, which to us is quite appropriate. That’s the whole idea of the film, it’s about taking the iconography of his life and putting it in the service of something else. It’s trying to take things you’re familiar with and turn their meaning inside out.
