True Detective may have been the series that started the trend of Hollywood megastars to perform on prestigious TV shows. It was so crowded with Hollywood megastars that it would be pardonable to think it was a series. Debuting in 2014, True Detective is an anthology series in which each season is a standalone story with its own cast, with Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan debuting in the first year.
In the second season, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn were replaced, while Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff and Ray Fisher appeared in the show’s junior years. Brilliantly written and stunningly filmed, this series combines elements of neo-noir, mystery and thriller, turning the detective drama genre on its head and going where few crime dramas dare to tread. Steeped in atmosphere and symbolism, the stories on offer include a pair of troubled detectives opening a cold case through a fresh murder investigation, a convoluted child murder, and a billion-dollar mystery that uncovers a sinister occult conspiracy.
More than a typical crime drama, True Detective is a powerful storytelling source that intertwines multiple narratives into a rich picture that makes you want to revisit, parse and analyze. From stunning and horrifying crimes to heartfelt and colorful characters, this is without a doubt one of the best crime shows of all time. The upcoming fourth season is due out in 2023, this time starring two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster, her first on-screen TV role since 1975.
